Are vacation home rentals and cabin rentals the way to go when you’re traveling with a family? They seem to be a very popular alternative to hotels.
How many people have actually rented a cabin or vacation home for their vacation? And did you rent by owner or through a company? Do you recommend it?

We rented a cabin (vacation home) for the 1st time about 3 years ago. It was alot cheaper than the other response you got (I guess it just depends on where you are going and how much the rentals are there).
We went to Blue Ridge GA and loved it so much, we bought our own cabin and started renting it out as well. To me, it’s a great deal because vacation homes offer alot of privacy (a whole house) and space vs a small hotel room. We are a family of 5 (3 kids) so when we go to hotels, we need to get 2 adjoining rooms. We can rent a upscale vacation home or cabin for less than the price of 2 hotel rooms so even for a family, it’s well worth it.
Vacation homes today have everything from game rooms to private hot tub and fireplaces on screen porch, multiply bedrooms and bath, fully equipped kitchens, gas grills, swimming pools and more…………so it’s worth a little extra for the added ammenities and space.
For us, it’s definately the way to go!
im planning on going to the outer banks this summer but i need a rental place where i can find a house. i already tried sun reality and stan white reality.

Does anyone know of any good vacation rentals for Big Bear? We want to go during the winter time in January for Skiing/Snowboading so we would like something relatively close to Bear Mtn or Snow Summit.
Having pets, I’ve stayed in most of the ones listed on this site. http://bigbear.com/childdogfriendly.php Most accomodations up there are really nice, but you really need to make reservations now because they fill up fast.
I keep seeing this from various conservative people here and there, but haven’t found anything to prove their claims.

I need a rental for a four day weekend in Ocean City. Near the beach front would be better, but anything near there is also fine.
I would do a search for "ocean city, maryland real estate" in any search engine. Most of the rentals at the beaches are done through real estate offices, and some of them have some nice photo tours of condos, etc. that are vacation rentals.
I’ve tried several but I’d really like once where I can make an advanced search & be specific in what I want (ie, pets ok, washer/dryer/price).
I tried Craigslist & a few different independent sites. Even an actual number to call where THEY search FOR you would be awesome.

I’m probably going to rent a vacation condo/villa that is advertised on one of the homeaway (vrbo, etc) websites. What are the "safe" methods to pay? Credit card? Pay Pal?
Credit card because you can always do a "charge back" if someone tries to scam you.
